DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

You first plucked us like brands out of the burning. We remember well when you drew us from a corrupt world, and from our own self-righteousness, and we came to Jesus. But you are drawing us still: we feel the sacred bands; we yield to them, glad to do so.

Lord, draw us this morning upward to yourself, nearer than ever. May we not be satisfied with those heights of devotion to which we have attained; but may we reach somewhat higher today.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1)

Not only do I not want at the present moment, but I never shall want. I may sometimes foolishly fancy that I shall come to want, but I never shall as long as God provides for me. How could such a Shepherd as he is, almighty and all-sufficient, ever suffer one of his sheep to lack any good thing? No; “I shall not want.”

All the world beside may want, but I shall not while Jehovah is my Provider. Famine may be sore in the land; there may be neither dew nor rain, and even the brook Cherith may, at last, be dried up; but since “Jehovah is my Shepherd, I shall not want.”

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE*
Good news for Christians: God saves sinners by grace.

In today’s prayer, we praised God for drawing us “from a corrupt world, and from our own self-righteousness, and we came to Jesus.” God’s drawing us from sin and self is the source and summit of the Christian life—we need to root ourselves in the gospel every day.

One great resource for rooting yourself in the gospel every day in Spurgeon’s classic book, All of Grace. This book is a great explanation of how and why God saves sinners like us by grace.

There’s a new audiobook of All of Grace available now that I know will encourage you in the gospel of grace. I hope you’ll check it out and be encouraged.
