DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
Most glorious Lord God, it is marvelous in our eyes that God should become incarnate, that your Son should take our flesh upon himself. It surprises us greatly that the Lord of Life should condescend to die, and that the incorruptible One should be laid in the grave. We are full of loving gratitude, we are also full of adoring wonder.

When we have stood at the sepulcher and looked into it, and thought of Jesus having lain there, when we have seen it open and knew that it was empty, we bless your name that even he died and was buried, and magnify you that his is risen again from the dead.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4)

To see your scepter, and even to feel your chastising rod; to know that you are a King, and that you rule over Israel; to know that, as a Shepherd, you carry a crook to guide your flock; shall be enough to comfort my heart, and to sustain my spirit.

Pray with Spurgeon: More than conquerors through him who has loved us

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
Oh that our spirit might be always subject to the Divine Spirit: may its earthiness and feebleness, only reveal the heavenliness and the strength of the indwelling Spirit of God. And oh, grant us to feel that we have power to overcome sin; that we have power to resist the lusts of the flesh, and to despise the pomp of the world, and the lust of the eyes (1 John 2:16).

Though we groan within ourselves concerning the body of this death (2 Corinthians 5:2), yet sing we also “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57)! Help your children to take the victory, to rejoice that they do conquer; yes that we are more than conquerors, through him who has loved us (Romans 8:37).

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me” (Psalm 23:4)

The presence of Christ is all that his people can ever want. The all-powerful, ever-faithful, infinitely-compassionate One being with us, what cause for fear can possibly remain?

How God’s grace helps us grow

Yesterday, I recommended The Discipline of Grace by Jerry Bridges. I wanted to share it again today because I think it’s such an important book.

If you want to grow in godliness in 2021, this book will be an invaluable tool. Learn how God’s grace empowers you for the pursuit of holiness. As we prayed today, “we have power to overcome sin.”

I read this book for the first time in 2014. It absolutely changed my life to know that God calls his people to be holy like he is holy, but also to know that he supplies the strength to pursue holiness.

Pray with Spurgeon: We are weak, but God you are strong

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
Lord, we are very weak, and in ourselves we have no desire to be otherwise, because when we are weak, then are we strong (2 Corinthians 12:9); but we are very strong in you, and we do wish to have faith to perceive this.

Lord, some of you children think that you are weak because they are; and suppose that grace will fail them because the flesh does: but oh, teach them better, and may they know that it is just in the death of the creature, that they shall find the life of God revealed.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil…” (Psalm 23:2–3)

Not only shall there be no evil, but I will fear none. A sense of the Lord’s presence lifts a Christian above even fear. You know how often it is true that we “feel a thousand deaths in fearing one.” But if we have a sense of our Savior’s presence, when we do really walk through the valley of death-shade, not a trace of fear shall come across our peaceful souls.

God’s grace, growth, and New Year’s resolutions

Did you know that God’s grace doesn’t just save you, it also gives you the power that you need to slay sin? As we celebrate Christmas this week, we’re celebrating that, “the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, [AND] instructing us to deny godlessness…” (Titus 2:11–12).

Don’t just make New Year’s resolutions this year — be equipped with God’s strength to actually grow.

One of my all-time favorite books is The Discipline of Grace by Jerry Bridges. This book explains how God’s grace empowers Christians to slay sin and grow in godliness. It is one of the helpful, practical, and encouraging books that I have ever read!

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
Are your dear children poor, or are they sick in body, or are they losing those they love, or is there yet a newly dug grave over which they could shed floods of tears?

Oh, sweet love of God, comfort them. Cover all the rocks, O mighty tide of everlasting love, till not a rock is seen; and on that glassy sea may our spirits float above the rocks, which else had wrecked our lives. We do pray, give us comfort, but also give us strength as well as consolation.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” (Psalm 23:2–3)

Not because of any goodness in me, but because of the goodness that is in him, and for the glory of his holy name, “he leads me in the paths of righteousness.”

Also, “He restores my soul.” When I wander, he restores my soul to the right road. When I become empty, he stores my soul again with good things; he restores my soul.

Pray with Spurgeon: God disciplines those he loves

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

What after all can there be to trouble the man whom God loves? Shall we not find even in your rod a sweetness, as Jonathan did, when he dipped his rod in the honey? Have you not said, “as many as I love I rebuke and chasten,” shall we not, therefore, take your rebukes and chastenings, and even rejoice in them, because therein the love of God is manifested toward us.

Are your dear children poor, or are they sick in body, or are they losing those they love, or is there yet a newly dug grave over which they could shed floods of tears? Oh, sweet love of God, comfort them.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” (Psalm 23:2–3)

What a peerless Guide he is, since infallible wisdom is his! And how gracious and condescending it is, on his part, to go first in the way which he means us to take! David does not say, “He drives me;” but “He leads me.”

In each path, he is my Exemplar in every virtue, for he himself has endured all temptations that are incident to my life’s pathway; and, all the way, ‘he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness.

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Oh that we might become more completely consecrated! May the image of Christ become more perfect upon us; stamp it deeper into our nature. We trust the image is there; but oh, that it set still deeper into our very selves, that all might see that the seal of the Holy Ghost was upon us, in the likeness of Christ our Lord.

Our Father, will you be pleased today to fill us with delight because of your love. Are we heavy of heart? Let your sweet love lighten the burden; for what after all can there be to trouble the man whom God loves?

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.” (Psalm 23:2)

The pasture is sweet and tender, and there is so much of the green grass that it cannot all be eaten, and the superabundance makes a soft bed for the tired sheep.

Rest, O believer, in the abundant provision of God’s grace! A sheep needs sometimes to lie down. It is as necessary for its health that it should have time to digest its food as that it should have proper and sufficient food to eat.

A Christ-centered audiobook to fill you with joy.

I can’t recommend Spurgeon’s classic book, All of Grace, enough. Spurgeon wrote the book to remind Christians of this wonderful good news of salvation and to invite non-Christians to taste and see.

The new audiobook of All of Grace will definitely do both of things. So, consider buying it as a Christmas gift for yourself — be refreshed by God’s grace at Christmas.

You could also buy it as a Christmas gift for a non-Christian you know. Invite them to take a refreshing drink from God’s well of grace for the first time.

Pray with Spurgeon: Draw us to Jesus; draw us away from sin

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

You first plucked us like brands out of the burning. We remember well when you drew us from a corrupt world, and from our own self-righteousness, and we came to Jesus. But you are drawing us still: we feel the sacred bands; we yield to them, glad to do so.

Lord, draw us this morning upward to yourself, nearer than ever. May we not be satisfied with those heights of devotion to which we have attained; but may we reach somewhat higher today.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1)

Not only do I not want at the present moment, but I never shall want. I may sometimes foolishly fancy that I shall come to want, but I never shall as long as God provides for me. How could such a Shepherd as he is, almighty and all-sufficient, ever suffer one of his sheep to lack any good thing? No; “I shall not want.”

All the world beside may want, but I shall not while Jehovah is my Provider. Famine may be sore in the land; there may be neither dew nor rain, and even the brook Cherith may, at last, be dried up; but since “Jehovah is my Shepherd, I shall not want.”

Good news for Christians: God saves sinners by grace.

In today’s prayer, we praised God for drawing us “from a corrupt world, and from our own self-righteousness, and we came to Jesus.” God’s drawing us from sin and self is the source and summit of the Christian life—we need to root ourselves in the gospel every day.

One great resource for rooting yourself in the gospel every day in Spurgeon’s classic book, All of Grace. This book is a great explanation of how and why God saves sinners like us by grace.

There’s a new audiobook of All of Grace available now that I know will encourage you in the gospel of grace. I hope you’ll check it out and be encouraged.

Pray with Spurgeon: Our love is so cold compared to God’s love

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
We pray for more love. We have expressed our love, but we are ashamed when we have done so, because, after all, what is our love? It is so faint, so cold to you, compared with your love to us. So we would adore you this morning for the love which you have manifested to us. You loved us before the foundation of the world: yours is no new compassion; for whom you foreknow, you predestined to be conformed to the image of your Son, out of your own pure love to them: and because you have loved us with an everlasting love, therefore with lovingkindness have you drawn us, and we feel the drawings now.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“The Lord is my Shepherd.” (Psalm 23:1)

What a precious title the psalmist used in speaking of his God! It is right to call the Lord a Shepherd. “The Shepherd of Israel” is a very blessed and true title for him; but “my Shepherd” is best of all. I wish, beloved, that each of you could truthfully say, with David, “‘The Lord is my Shepherd.’ He owns me; and as I am his property, he will preserve me, protect me, provide for me, guide me, and be everything to my weakness, and folly, and necessity, that a shepherd is to a sheep.”

Pray with Spurgeon: We are not ourselves until we are lost in you

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
Oh, Jesus, we love you—we are yours and you are ours. You have given yourself to us, as well as for us; and now we cheerfully give ourselves back to you, feeling that we are never so much our own, as when we are yours; that indeedwe are not ourselves until we are lost in you, but that then have we found our truest humanity when it and all else is surrendered to the all-conquering power of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“Praise him for his powerful acts; praise him for his abundant greatness.” (Psalm 150:2)

Here is a reason for praise. In these deeds of power we see himself. These doings of his omnipotence are always on behalf of truth and righteousness. His works of creation, providence, and redemption all call for praise; they are his acts, and his acts of might, therefore let him be praised for them.

His being is unlimited, and his praise should correspond therewith. He possesses a multitude or a plenitude of greatness, and therefore he should be greatly praised. There is nothing little about God, and there is nothing great apart from him. If we were always careful to make our worship fit and appropriate for our great Lord how much better should we sing! How much more reverently should we adore! Such excellent deeds should have excellent praise.

Great, Christ-exalting music for kids

My family is always on the hunt for Christ-exalting resources for kids, especially music. We recently discovered a new band that has put together some really incredibly rich (and really fun) Christian music for toddlers.

The music from Grace Kids has been playing on repeat at our house for the last few weeks. This band (based out of Grace Fellowship Church in Kentucky) has put out two albums of biblically rich songs for toddlers.

Pray with Spurgeon: Jesus has loved us — we must love him

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
O Lord, it has seemed to us impossible not to love you; for you are so supremely lovable, so full of goodness, so perfect. You have manifested yourself to us as love, and shall not love go out towards love?

Especially this morning we feel our hearts warmed towards you in the person of your dear Son. Surely we cannot see him made our brother, bone of our bone, and flesh of our flesh, sympathizing with us, married to us, died for us and risen again for us—we cannot gaze into his right royal face, without feeling our heart melt at the very sight of him.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or one stroke of a letter will pass away from the law until all things are accomplished.” (Matthew 5:18)

Not a syllable is to be rendered null and void. Even to the smallest letters, the dot of every “i”, and the crossing of every “t”, the law will outlast the creation. The Old Testament is as sacredly guarded as the New. “The Word of the Lord endures forever” (Isaiah 40:8, 1 Peter 1:25).

Modern critics have set themselves an impossible task in their endeavor to get rid of the inspiration of the whole sacred volume, or of this book, or that chapter, or that verse; for the whole shall come forth of their furnace as silver purified seven times.
