DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Our Father, we are exceedingly weak. Most of all, we are wicked when left to ourselves, and we easily fall prey to the enemy. Therefore, help us. We confess that sometimes, even in prayer when we are closest to you, evil thoughts or wicked desires intrude upon us. Oh, what poor simpletons we are. Lord, help us. We feel compelled to draw even nearer to you now, to hide under the shadow of your wings. We wish to be completely lost in God. We pray that you may live in us, that we may no longer live, but Christ may live in us, revealing himself through us.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“While I was with them, I was protecting them by your name that you have given me. I guarded them and not one of them is lost, except the son of destruction, so that the Scripture may be fulfilled.” (John 17:11)

When God protects us, he keeps us unified. Our divisions are not the result of his work. When we stray from his protection and depart from his Word, we become separated in our hearts from him and from one another. But by his protection, he keeps his children united.

How Christ offers hope in the darkest valleys

Today was prayed for an end to war. This has become an urgent request over the last few months, as we’ve seen chaos unfold in Ukraine. It’s been increasingly obvious that we live in a world that is broken and we need Christ to redeem us.

I love the book Christ and Calamity: Grace and Gratitude in the Darkest Valleyby Harold L. Senkbeil. This book offers simple, short, biblical devotions to help you grapple with suffering in your own life and in the world with the hope of God.

Christ does not run from your suffering — he runs towards you with hope and compassion, ready and able to help you and sustain you.
